The day was unusually warm in Scranton, Pennsylvania when Mason Mills walked away from his life. Winter still froze the ground, but the almost-balmy breeze warmed his skin. Freedom invigorated him, and Mason never looked back. The woman he once loved had morphed into someone he barely recognized. She was pregnant, but mutual destruction was inevitable if he stuck around any longer.
After two days on the road, grief caught up with him. He would never see his baby daughterâs first steps, never see her grow into a young woman. Loss settled in his gut as heavy as a millstone. Mason often wondered how his daughterâs life had turned out.
Years later, Mason glimpsed a poster outside a small design firm. He stared, doubting his eyes, but there was no mistaking those distinct eyes. The beautiful, dark-haired young woman resembled the woman he once loved. Instinct told him this was his daughter. He hesitated before entering the business, nervous that he might finally meet his long-lost child. Disappointingly, a petite blonde woman greeted him instead. She did not conceal her disapproval for his appearance.
He asked if the girl on the poster worked in the building. Posture erect and eyes disdainful, the woman informed him that the young lady was not present. Mason did not trust the womanâs words, but he nodded his thanks and left. For days afterward he lingered in the neighborhood in hopes of catching a glimpse of the girl. Was she a model at the firm? An employee? She never arrived.
Mason decided that finding her was hopeless and moved on. He took on odd jobs, wandering to new cities, and, after a number of years, he earned enough to rent a cramped studio on the outskirts of New York City.
âMason, you donât get out much, do you? Ever head up the coast?â Neb was younger than Mason, but a fair boss and a steady hand at renovating old houses. Conversation flowed between the two men during work days. âLong weekend coming soon. You should go have fun for once.â
It had been a long time since Mason had contemplated a vacation. He stopped in the middle of tearing out cabinets in the dilapidated house they worked.
âWhy the beach? I hate swimming. Itâs the middle of winter.â
Neb chuckled. âNot the beach. Itâs the towns you should visit. They have festivals, boat races, all kinds of things to enjoy. Plus, nothing beats that salt air. You should try loosening up.â
Neb continued to ramble. Mason half listened, thinking he had no reason to waste hard-earned money hanging out with rich people on the coast. Something Neb said next caught his attention.
âIâm going with my wife next weekend. Do you want to come? My wife never misses the big fashion show.â
âFashion show?â Mason echoed, mind racing. He thought of the poster with the beautiful face and wondered if his daughter might be there.
âShe loves attending fashion shows so she can spend my money when the new season starts. We can enjoy the town and leave her to it.
